Fraction arithmetic

Calculate exact fractions or signed mixed numbers, with reduced and mixed results.

How this works

Fractions use common denominators for addition and subtraction; multiplication and division use exact integer products and greatest-common-divisor reduction. A negative mixed number such as −2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3).

Example

Using the example inputs, reduced fraction is 5/6.

Scope and assumptions

Mixed-number components are limited to one trillion, with positive denominators and a proper fractional part. Decimal output is approximate; reduced fractions are exact.
